Job interviews in Nigeria can feel hard. The questions are often simple, but your answers need to be clear.
Use these ten questions to practise. Each answer is a sample. Change it to match your real work. If you are a graduate, use an internship, NYSC task, or school project.
How to answer well
Give a short answer first. Then give one example. End with the result or lesson.
Do not memorise every word. Learn the main point and speak in your own voice.
1. Tell me about yourself
Sample answer: “I have worked in customer support for two years. I helped people by phone and email. I solved about 40 cases each week. I want to bring these skills to your team.”
Keep this answer about your work. Do not tell your full life story.
2. Why do you want this job?
Sample answer: “I have worked in sales and customer care. Your team serves small businesses, which I enjoy helping. I can help you find new customers and keep them happy.”
Show that you read about the role. Do not say only, “I need a job.”
3. What do you know about our company?
Sample answer: “Your company helps small firms take payments. You serve customers across Nigeria. I have helped people fix payment issues before. That is why I chose this role.”
Check the company website, product, customers, and recent news before the interview.
4. What are your strengths?
Sample answer: “I explain things clearly. In my last job, I wrote simple steps for our users. They could then fix common issues without a call.”
Pick a strength that the job needs. Give proof.
5. What is one weakness you are working on?
Sample answer: “I used to spend too long checking my work. Now I use a short checklist and set a time limit. I also ask for help early. I finish on time more often.”
Do not say a fake weakness like, “I work too hard.” Show what you are doing to improve.
6. Tell me about a problem you solved
Good answer: “A customer could not finish a payment. I checked the account, found a wrong setting, and explained the fix. The payment worked, and I wrote a short guide so the team could solve the same issue faster.”
Use the situation, your action, and the result.
7. Tell me about a time you made a mistake
Good answer: “I once sent a report with an old number. I told my manager, sent the correct report, and added a date check to my process. I have not made the same mistake again.”
Choose a real mistake that you fixed. Do not blame another person.
8. Why should we hire you?
Good answer: “You need someone who can speak with customers, track issues, and follow up. I have done these tasks for two years, and I can start with a clear work plan. I also learn new tools fast.”
Connect your proof to the job needs.
9. What salary do you expect?
Sample answer: “What monthly pay range have you set for this role? I would like to know the pay and benefits before we agree.”
If they ask for a figure, use a range from your own research. Say the amount in naira per month. Ask if it is before or after tax. Also ask about transport, health cover, and other benefits.
10. Do you have any questions for us?
Good answer: “What would success look like in the first three months? What is the next step after this interview?”
Ask at least one useful question. You can also ask about the team, tools, training, or work goals.
Simple interview tips for Nigeria
- For an online interview, test your sound and camera. Charge your device. Check your data and have a backup plan for a power cut.
- Check the address and plan for traffic. Give yourself extra time to reach the interview.
- Wear clean clothes that fit the company and role.
- Keep your CV and job post near you.
- Use a quiet place when possible.
- Speak clearly and pause before you answer.
- Do not pay anyone to secure an interview or job.
Use the STAR method
For story questions, use STAR:
- Situation: What was happening?
- Task: What did you need to do?
- Action: What did you do?
- Result: What changed?
This keeps your answer short and easy to follow.
Final practice plan
- Write short answers to the ten questions.
- Say each answer out loud.
- Record two answers and listen to them.
- Remove long parts and unclear words.
- Practise with a friend or a mock interview.
Practice can help you feel calm. Speak in your own words. Your answers do not need to be perfect.
